What is a Kentucky Hot Brown?
For those of you who did NOT grow up in the heart of the Bluegrass, a Kentucky Hot Brown is a culinary tradition featured on menus from Pikeville to Paducah! The traditonal Hot Brown is an open-faced sandwich of toast, turkey, tomato and bacon smothered in a Mornay Sauce and broiled. Historians date the sandwich to 1926, when Chef Fred K. Schmidt at The Brown Hotel in Louisville created a different sandwich to appease the appetites of the late-night dance patrons. The Artisan Kitchen version features savory French toast with roasted turkey, tomato and bacon layered in a three-cheese Bechamel Sauce and topped with more Parmesan Cheese and Green Onions. A southern comfort favorite, no doubt!
